Pabrik Toyota di Australia Ditutup Setelah Beroperasi 54 Tahun

Altona — Pabrik Toyota di Australia secara resmi tutup setelah beroperasi 54 tahun dan mencapai total produksi 3,45 juta kendaraan, pada hari ini (3/10).

Penutupan ini menindaklanjuti keputusan Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) 3 tahun silam yang berencana menutup kegiatan produksi di Australia.

Toyota akan menyulap pabrik yang berada di Altona tersebut menjadi fasilitas pengembangan produk dan pelatihan. Toyota Motor Corporation Australia (TMCA) juga akan memindahkan fungsi pemasaran dan penjualan yang berada di Sydney ke kantor pusat di Melbourne.

“Dengan tulus saya mengucapkan terima kasih atas usaha para karyawan, pelanggan, pemasok, dealer, pejabat pemerintah, dan masyarakat lokal yang telah mendukung kegiatan produksi di Australia. Meski bisnis manufaktur akan berakhir hari ini, kami akan terus berupaya lebih jauh untuk menjadi produsen mobil yang akan dicintai oleh semua orang di Australia dan didukung lebih dari sebelumnya,” pesan Akio Toyoda, presiden TMC, via sebuah video kepada para karyawan TMCA saat upacara penutupan pabrik.

Dengan berhentinya operasi pabrik Toyota di Altona, TMCA berubah menjadi perusahaan distribusi dan penjualan di Australia.

Toyota Tiara (Corona) merupakan model pertama pabrik Toyota Motor Corporation Australia, sementara Toyota Camry menjadi model paling banyak diproduksi (2,168,104 unit). Camry diproduksi sejak 1987-2017. Produksi Tiara sendiri mencapai 1,684 unit (1963-1965), lalu dilanjutkan dengan nama Corona dengan 336,197 unit (1965-1987).

Dalam sejarah, TMCA pernah memproduksi Holden Apollo yang berbasis Camry dan Holden Nova berbasis Corolla kepada GM Holden.##
